‘SO LONG, CHARLOTTE!’: Republicans Eye New Site For RNC Amid Social Distancing Showdown

WASHINGTON — Republicans are on the lookout for a new location to hold the Republican National Convention this August. After a war of words with North Carolina officials lasting several weeks, fed up Republican officials have announced their intent to change venue, which could wind up costing the Tarheel State millions of dollars in revenue.

Tensions between the RNC and North Carolina officials began after President Donald Trump asked for assurances that the convention could be carried out hold without the restrictions imposed by masks and social distancing. But Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, refused writing in a letter to Trump officials Tuesday that “the people of North Carolina do not know what the status of COVID-19 will be in August, so planning for a scaled-down convention with fewer people, social distancing and face coverings is a necessity.”

The governor’s statement led Ronna McDaniel, the chairwoman of the RNC, to let North Carolina officials know it was likely that the event would be moved.

According to a New York Times report, officials are planning to visit Nashville this week. Other cities reportedly under consideration include Las Vegas, Orlando, Jacksonville and Atlanta, Georgia.
