WASHINGTON — As popular as President Donald Trump is with his Republican base, a landslide re-election is anything but certain, Newt Gingrich said Tuesday.
Despite a “remarkable economy” and his penchant for keeping campaign promises, Gingrich said the president will face a “tough battle” against Democrats to hold his spot in the White House.
“He has been very good on judges, very good on deregulation, very good on tax cuts,” the former House Speaker said, but negative press coverage is going to hurt him.
“It’s tough, but I think we are at 92% negative press coverage,” Gingrich told Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.”
“The fact that he is still standing is kind of amazing.”
Gingrich said despite the tough road ahead, he still believes Trump will do what he always does. Win.
“He believes it’s going to be a fight to the finish, but he also believes that the Democrats are pretty weak, and I am inclined to agree with him, said Gingrich. “I think they could stumble into a disaster if they are not careful.”
Gingrich’s comments come as record numbers of Trump supporters began camping out in Orlando ahead of a rally planned for Tuesday night. According to White House sources, the president plans to officially declare his intention to run for re-election during the Orlando event.
“Trump is unique in that he was elected in the end by all the people who were mad at Washington, who wanted somebody with goals, who didn’t mind that he had weaknesses, as long as he was a fighter,” said Gingrich. “He has convinced them he is a fighter.”
