WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Rand Paul on Wednesday came out swinging in defense of President Donald Trump, calling former CIA director John Brennan the most “unhinged” CIA director of all time.
Brennan, who has been vocal in his criticism of Trump, made headlines this week when he referred to the president’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin “an act of treason”.
“John Brennan started out his adulthood by voting for the Communist Party presidential candidate,” Paul said during a Wednesday interview with Fox News. “He is now ending his career by showing himself to be the most biased, bigoted, over the top, hyperbolic, sort of unhinged director of the CIA we have ever had.”
“And really it is an insult to everything about our government to have a former head of the CIA calling the President treasonous just because he doesn’t like him,” Paul continued. “But realize that Brennan — you know, I filibustered Brennan, I tried to keep Brennan from ever being the leader of the CIA. But realize that Brennan and Clapper are known for wanting to expand the authority of the intelligence agencies to grab up everyone’s information, including Americans. So I don’t have a lot of respect for these people. Even before they decided to go on hating the president, I disliked these people because they wanted to grab up so much power and use it against the American people.”
“What should worry every American is John Brennan was in charge of the CIA, the most powerful intelligence gathering group on the planet,” Paul went on. “They can absorb every bit of information you can imagine, your phone calls, your metadata, your bank records, your visa records. They can destroy any person’s life. The person at the head of that turns out to be a very much partisan, a Trump hater and very much just someone who is a, you know, Trump hater, I guess that’s the best way to put it.”
When asked to address allegations by Democrats that Trump colluded with Russia to sway the outcome of the 2016 presidential election, Paul said the only person responsible for negatively impacting the election outcome for Democrats in 2016 was their party’s nominee, Hillary Clinton.
“The president sees the Mueller investigation. He sees all these accusations from partisan Democrats, Hillary Clinton, saying ‘Oh, he colluded with the Russians,” Paul said. “The only people who we actually know colluded with the Russians were Hillary Clinton who paid a British agent who paid Russians for information for the dossier.”
Paul, who at one time fiercely challenged Trump as the Republican nominee during the 2016 presidential election, serves as a Senator for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
