‘HE’S MY HERO’: Quick thinking 10 year old delivers newborn baby; saves Mom’s life

Sulphur, LA — A 10 year old boy is being hailed as a hero after the quick thinking youngster delivered his newborn baby brother and saved his own mother’s life.

Ashley Moreau says she was home alone with her 10 year old son Jayden on August 11 when her water broke. Just 34 weeks along, Moreau told her son to go next door to alert his grandmother, who called 911.

As Moreau waited for help to arrive, she says her son took control of the situation after returning back to the house to find his mother bleeding on the bathroom floor. As it became obvious that the baby was not going to wait for paramedics before making his grand entrance into the world, little Jayden knew it was on him to help save the day.

“When he got to the bathroom, he just took a deep breath and said, ‘OK Mom, just tell me what I need to do,’” Moreau told KPLC (http://www.kplctv.com/story/36181469/boy-who-saved-mom-brothers-life-given-key-to-city-of-sulphur). “He didn’t look scared, he looked calm and brave and I said ‘OK I’m going to tell you what to do and we need to get your brother out as fast as possible because he’s breech and he can’t breathe.”

After delivering the baby on the bathroom floor, Jayden somehow had the forethought to run to the kitchen and get a nasal aspirator to help the baby breathe.

“I wasn’t even thinking, I was just amazed,” Fontenot said. “I didn’t know what was going on.”

Kelsey Richard, the baby’s father, said he wasn’t made aware of his stepson’s heroism until he arrived at the hospital shortly after mother and baby were transported by paramedics.

“You don’t hear about stuff like this,” Richard told KPLC. “It’s amazing how brave and everything he was. Calm, collected, he saved their life. He’s a hero.”

At an assembly at Jayden’s elementary school, the boy was honored by the city and given a proclamation from the Mayor of Sulphur.

In addition to receiving the key to the city, only the second to be awarded in the mayor’s career, Jayden was given the title of hero, and Chief of Police Lewis Coats gave him a certificate to be chief for a day to use whenever he wants.

“Jayden is a hero in the City of Sulphur’s eyes,” said Mayor Chris Duncan. “He saved the life of not only his mom, but his little brother Daxx.”

“It’s a special thing, heroes in our eyes, get the biggest honor the City of Sulphur can do, and we have a big key to give him today,” Mayor Duncan said while presenting Jayden with the key to the city.

As for the town’s littlest hero, he seems to be taking all the new found attention in stride.

When asked how he felt about being honored by the mayor, Jayden replied, “I feel excited I guess.”

Jayden’s new brother is still recovering in the hospital, but doctors say he is doing well and is expected to be released by the end of the week.
